Best Places to Dive in October

October is one of the most rewarding months of the year to be on a liveaboard. It is manta season across two of the world's best destinations, the Red Sea is still warm with big shark action offshore, and several remote regions are just reopening after the monsoon. Here is where to point your fins, and why.

Quick answer

The standout October choices are the Maldives and Raja Ampat for manta rays, and the Egyptian Red Sea for warm-water shark and reef diving. The Andaman Sea season in Thailand also begins mid to late October. Choose by the marine life you want and the diving level that suits you.

Maldives: peak manta season

October sits at the tail of the south-west monsoon, when nutrient-rich water fuels plankton blooms and draws manta rays in numbers. Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay is the famous gathering point, while South Ari Atoll keeps its year-round whale sharks. A liveaboard is the natural choice because it lets the crew follow the plankton and the animals between atolls rather than diving one house reef.

Most Maldives diving suits Open Water divers, although channel and current dives reward Advanced Open Water and good buoyancy. For the full picture see our guides to the best time to dive the Maldives and whale sharks in the Maldives, or jump straight to Maldives liveaboards.

Raja Ampat: the season opens

The Raja Ampat liveaboard season begins around October and runs through April, bringing the calmest seas and clearest water of the year. It is the most biodiverse marine region on Earth, with dense fish schools, reef sharks, walking wobbegongs and the start of peak manta activity at sites like Manta Sandy and Dampier Strait. Currents can be strong, so Advanced Open Water and solid experience are recommended. Browse Indonesia liveaboards to compare boats and routes.

Egypt: warm water and offshore sharks

The Red Sea dives all year, and October is a sweet spot: comfortable water temperatures and a strong shark season on the southern offshore reefs. The Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone bring grey reef sharks, oceanic whitetips and, with luck, hammerheads and threshers, while the northern routes add the famous wrecks. Routes range from Open Water friendly to demanding blue-water dives, so match the itinerary to your level. See Egypt liveaboards and our guide to famous Red Sea wrecks.

Thailand and the Bahamas

In Thailand, the Andaman Sea liveaboard season opens in mid to late October as the monsoon eases, reopening the Similan and Surin islands and Richelieu Rock. Early-season trips can be excellent value. In the Bahamas, October is a calmer shoulder month with the autumn shark season building towards the winter peak at Tiger Beach.
