The best time to dive Maldives depends on what you want to see.
Overall best: August to October, when manta season peaks. December to April gives the calmest, clearest water. This is a realistic chance, never a guarantee.
You can dive the Maldives year round, and the season splits in two. The dry northeast monsoon from December to April brings calmer seas and the best visibility around North and South Male Atoll. The wet southwest monsoon from May to November brings plankton that draws mantas and whale sharks, with famous manta gatherings in Baa Atoll usually best from June to November. Whale sharks are seen year round in South Ari Atoll. Water stays warm year round at around 27 to 30 C, so a 3mm wetsuit is normally enough.
Live air, sea, UV and local time at Male, the main departure port. Actual diving conditions vary by site and season.
The Maldives is one of the best places in the world for manta rays and whale sharks. Expect reef mantas, whale sharks, grey reef sharks, whitetip and nurse sharks, eagle rays, turtles and big schools of fish. Some southern routes reach tiger sharks and other big pelagics.
The central atolls of North and South Male, Ari and Baa are the classic Maldives liveaboard route, with mantas, whale sharks and channel diving, and Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is a protected manta feeding site. Vaavu and Meemu add current swept channel dives with grey reef sharks and eagle rays. The Deep South, including Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah and Addu, has fewer boats, bigger sharks and stronger current.
Many Maldives trips accept Open Water divers, but strong currents in the channels mean Advanced certification and some logged dives make for a better and safer trip. Deep south routes are for experienced divers. Filter by dive level and logged dives.
Almost all Maldives liveaboards board near Male, at Velana International Airport, which has direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Central atoll routes leave from the Male area. Far southern routes may include a short domestic flight to an atoll such as Huvadhoo or Fuvahmulah, arranged as part of the trip.
Flights to Maldives can cross Middle East airspace. When a real airspace restriction or an airline route suspension affects this route, the live status here shows it with the official source.
Current status: checked continuously against the official airspace source. Open this page with scripts on to see the live result.
See every destination on the travel warnings and airspace page. If a warning could change your plans, read do you need travel insurance for a liveaboard. This is a summary for divers, always check the official advisory and your airline before you travel.
Most nationalities receive a free arrival visa, but check current entry rules and complete the traveller declaration before you fly.
Start with the Maldives Immigration (IMUGA), then check the full liveaboard visa requirements checklist for passport validity, transit and operator forms. The exact rule always depends on your own passport and route.

Most days mean several guided dives on channels, thilas and reefs, with meals and cabins on board between sites. Routes often cover Male, Ari and Baa atolls.
Year round in South Ari Atoll. Mantas peak in the southwest monsoon.
Yes on calmer central atoll routes, but currents can be strong, so more logged dives help.
